Painting the Ancestral Stories of the Asaur Azbri Productions (6 min 30 sec) A ceremonial clan house filled with paintings and statues tell ancestral stories for those who know how to read them. Art is tied to a vigorous ritual cycle. This mini documentary is a brief account of the opening of a new clan house in Tongwijamb in the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea. It observes the final days of preparation, decorating, and painting participated in only by initiated men. Gutok Yantaka, the leading artist responsible for the designs, hands this responsibility over to the younger men in his concluding speech.
